What happened to wrapping them around the shoulders? You know, I've never seen that done outside of one of those special rides like l'eroica...

Another classic setup was a Zeus tubular tire carrier, that used giant rubber bands to secure the tire. They must have made millions of these, as there are still plenty of NOS ones available. Other companies made them, but the Zeus are most common.
