My latest attempt was to drill it with a dremmel and very thin drill bit, only to have two of the bits break.

Why not just use a larger bit? A 2-2.5mm bit will not damage the lever and will certainly clean out the cable. Drill slowly. I've done that satisfactually (sp?) several times without any mark on the lever afterwards; even works on Ergo- and STI-levers. You won't have to worry about any discoloration to the lever, loss of facial hair or blindness.
