Thank you to all who gave me advice and ideas - both on and off the list. Will have to give it some thought - WD40 definitely did not work overnight. Now to find a Canadian supplier of Kroil or something similar. Like the idea of the candle wax though. Mechanical intervention (i.e. drilling will be a last resort and will probably require help from a machine shop).

Will let you know what works.
