Take this off list if I am mistakenly asking about a balloon-tire bike part.

A Shimano 333 bottom bracket spindle (in perfect condition!) was mistakenly sent to me as part of a Campy Nuovo Record crankset sale. (Warning to those who liquidated their cycling hobby of 20 years ago without refreshing memory of what precipitated the abandonment <grin>)

There are several ways the spindle is wrong. I am asking about three of them

First, references to Shimano 333 in archives are to a 3speed internal hub bike. There are no references to the BB. Was this spindle even intended for double-ring crankset?

Second, there is 5mm more space between the bearing races than for another Shimano BB spindle I have on hand for comparison. They are both marked "68", Did cups vary that much in thickness, with this spindle expecting thin ones? Or is "68" spurious; or did BB shells vary in width, historically?

Third, to use the Campy cranks as a measuring tool or indicator, the draw of the spindle tapers into the crank arms is decidedly greater for the Shiimano 333 spindlebut still inadequate. In Shimano history, did the company use more than one square taper? Or is this just an example of poor manufacturing and QC regulation?
