LEESBURG VA. A rag-tag group of bicyclists descended on the town of Leesburg, near Washington DC, this past weekend. Despite record-setting high temperatures, this eclectic group was witnessed seemingly everywhere in the surrounding area, riding all manor of unusual, colorful machines. The group seemed to represent all ages, and could be see wearing a bizarre mix of riding clothes, from Hawaiian shirts, to old wool jerseys, to Lycra racing gear. Reports of some riders wearing nothing at all cannot be verified at this time.
Despite some initial concerns by local residents, the cyclists all appeared to be courteous and friendly, if sometimes overly exuberant when talking about their strange mix of bicycles.
Apparently, the group was in the area to attend some sort of annual gathering, although no record could be found of a gathering of this type occurring here in the past. Some in the group described this annual convergence as a right-of-passage and something akin to a gathering of the tribes. The event seemed to culminate at the local county fairgrounds with a large display of bicycles and related parts and accessories, and a social assembly best compared to a religious congregation. When contacted, organizers appeared somewhat exhausted, but vowed to do it all again next year.
