Dale and Gang

I can't say I raced on my Varsity but here is my story....

I lived behind the Schwinn store on Bijou St. in Colo. Springs at the time. I must have been in that store it seemed like everyday. I lusted after that bike for years. At that time I had a converted red Murray with banana seat and ape hangers. You know the one you ride down hill as fast as you can hit the brakes and go thru a rear tire in one evening.

Any way I got my first varsity 10 spd on my 10th birthday (1965). The Copper paint one w/ white letters. I thought I was the coolest thing since sliced bread...I know I was the fastest...Yuk Yuk. That bike went thru several conversions it even at one time had ape hangers (its hippie stage) then it went back to racing style. Since we were a military family it made more than one move with us. I rode that thing all over the place. Unfortunately one summer day in San Pedro, Ca it was stolen out of my garage in plain day light.

That negative experence is really what got me to ride even more and eventually race. I took my insurance money went down to Kings Bicycles and bought a white Peugeot UO8. That was 1971

Cheers,

Jack
