The biggest issue with the Varsity had a lot to do with those solid brick forks! I think those things were forged ! Maybe even made by the Ashtabula Co that made the one piece cranks.. In any case the forks were strong but ride like poop.

Probably true in the case of the Varsity, although I confess I never owned one.? I did start my lightweight bicycle experience with a UO-8 like many others did and thought it magical at the time - but I was comparing to 3-speed "English Racers".? I must say I think my Schwinn Superior is a better bike than that UO-8, though probably no lighter.? But I can't do a direct comparison, as I sold the UO-8 about 35 years ago.

I remember making the leap from a Varsity to a Peugeot UO-8. The difference- even though both were pretty low end "10 speeds" in their time- was night and day. The Peugeot was exponentially more fun to ride. Once you'd ridden even a low-end Euro "10 speed" there was no going back to a Varsity.

Just in case you're not, FYI, the Schwinn we know and love went broke and everything was sold off... the name (only) went to a Canadian company that specializes in big box bikes and has them all made in China. Hence their availability in Costco, Target and other fine retailers (!) No real Schwinn left to support in my opinion.

The Paramount was the really only true racer early on, later came some other models that might squeeze by into the true "racer" designation...
