Hi Kevin, here's my take:

For mid 70s, there was only the Record front derailleur, with typical silver and chromed parts (No black armed, SR unit until about 1982). My understanding is that it would have an old flat plate outer cage, (no lip yet till 1977), that has a squarish, flat faced lower clamp pivot housing (as opposed to the sleeker, more aerodynamic (and probably weaker) curved front face of older units from the early 70s. The diamond shape with logo on the swinging clamp should still be large, as they didn't pare them down until after the failure of the straight band clamp on the late 70s 4-hole derailleur that you mentioned. There should also be a little cir clip to hold on the upper swing arm. Let me know if you need pics!

As for the wheel guides on your brake shoes, your brakes must be a later pair, as I think the plastic covering was also an effect of the CPSC activity, coming around in about 1977. Your cable q/rs on the calipers should certainly be flat, not cupped, which was another CPSC effect. No idea here of what you might find if you peel off the black plastic that plagues you. But if your calipers match the date otherwise, I would recommend simply selling the plastic coated shoes you have, and purchasing another set that is older ... they seem to show up on Ebay often enough. Hope I've helped...

Hi list, I'm sure someone will know this question, [Chuck?] hope so anyway! I have a project planned to build a 1st generation Super Record bike, I'll be building the frame in a mid 70s style [KOF] and I have all the 1st gen' parts, rear mech, twin bolt post etc, but my question is regarding the brakes and front mech..........my brakes are the Piccolo with nuts as opposed to AK and they have the chrome brake shoes with the plastic coating, I would have thought that the first SR brakes would have been supplied without the plastic coating? This could be easily removed by gently melting the plastic, but what would be revealed? hopefully the chrome would be good and also the lettering would still be there? ..........as anyone ever tried this? actually I have, but I can't remember if the lettering was still on the guides?

My second question is regarding the front mech, I have a 4 hole narrow band mech but I would think that would be appropriate for a 79 year bike, so the correct front mech should be a 3 hole clamp on with silver arms? or would it be the type without the 'lip' on the cage?
