Probably in the days that these were produced, copy work was done with a copy camera on a stand, the item to be copied parallel to the film plane, with 2 lights angled at 45 degrees to the original on either side of the camera (so as to eliminate reflection, smooth the paper by eliminating shadows, and even up the lighting). this is even easier to simulate with digital cameras, especially directly hooking up the camera to the computer...
