IIRC, Ian and that Freddy Grubb bike appeared in a multipage article in Bicycling!! in the late 60's or early 70s. Note that he used a small outer ring, one of his setups being stated as 46-40. In that way he could have a small inner ring and a large FW cog, but still use the short cage Campy Record or Nuovo Record RD that he seemed to favor. Everything on his bikes seems thoroughly thought out and taylored to his personal taste, which of course was important, as he no doubt spent more hours in the saddle over his lifetime than Eddy Merckx has, as Ian's touring career was several decades longer than Eddy's racing career.

I hope someone will preserve and display Ian's bikes equipped as he used them, to inspire future touring cyclists. RIP Ian Hibell.

Ian Hibell, Britain's most accomplished touring cyclist, has been killed whilst on tour in a cycling accident near Athens, Greece. Ian stubbornly refused to modernise and rode his on-topic bikes thousands of miles to the very end. You can see more of Ian and his bikes here.... http://www.bikebrothers.co.uk/ianhibell.htm
