I used tire savers for a while, but was always bothered by the constant noise they made. I learned how to use my gloved hands instead, and only jammed my gloved hand between my rear tire and the seat tube once, when I was both tired and dehydrated (on a long, hot uphill at the end of a long ride). I have found that I've become better at watching for glass, the little debris triangles at intersections, etc., over the years. (Or maybe just been lucky to have ridden in places where the roads were cleaner?)

Using larger (700 x 28) Kevlar (tm) - belted tires has also helped a great deal, IMHO. (I don't like the extreme rolling resistance of sitting on a curb patching flats. As long as my tires corner well on 40 MPH downhills, I'm happy.)
