I took someone's bad advice and applied naval jelly to my almost-black freewheel, to make it all-black. It promptly turned all-silver. Le me tell you, Evapo-Rust does NOT strip the black from a freewheel, but naval jelly sure does the trick ...
What is the black coating on a freewheel?
Is it an oxide coating? Is it a zinc chromate on a zinc-plated cog? Something else ??
Is there any easy way to restore or refresh it (no cracks about magic markers, please !!!)
