One more tidbit -

Once was offered an old "Schwinn Paramount" road bike, but it didn't look right. The seller had found it abanded by the roadside. It was rather complete, but it was certainly very ugly and he found it in a very exclusive area - certainly someone could have mistaken it for a junky 10sp and thrown it out.

Turns out the frame was a Rene Herse - so not every misrepresentation is malicious or a bad one. The bike probably had been painted appropriately for someone's Schwinn race team of the day and then forgotten about.
