To CR List Members-I have recently begun to read all the major cycling publications including that of Bicisport from Italy about the Olympic road race and oh what a race it was. Velo-News focused its attention on Fabian Cancellera who virtually time trialed his way to a bronze medal. USA rider Levi Leipheimer said that it was impossible to stay with him as the race reached its conclusion. As a 60 something rider, I was at the Olympic road race in Montreal in 1976 and that was another epic race. The course was brutual, the heat took its toll on riders, and the race was filled with East German and Soviet riders. Sweden's Bernt Johansson won that race coming in by himself on a white Peugeot PX10LE.The race also marked the very beginning of US riders breaking into big time bicycle racing with the suprise 6th place finish of George Mount on an orange Guerciotti with his Velo Sport decals on the downtube. George was given praise in the European cycling press about nearly taking the bronze. One British publication described him as the American boy scout who beat most of the world's best on that day. Was any CR member at any Olympic road races, Moscow 1980,Mexico City 1968,Tokyo 1964, or even Rome 1960?Would anyone like to share his experiences being at these races? By the way, as we all love our classic bikes, the prevailing bicycle at the 1976 Montreal road race was the Colnago Super. We counted more of these bikes than any other marque as we made our rounds at each country's stalls before the race began. Keep spinning all-Norm Hellman, Riverdale,New York
