You know I've never had any problems with 1R's and haven't read about any on the list either. I have several on my bikes and I've had no problems with slipping or squeaking. I assume the slipping/squeaking problems involve the bar binder mechanism and not the stem expander bolt/steerer interface? I guess it makes sense that the 1A would clamp with more force than the serrated wedgie thing that secures the bars on a 1R. Is there/should there be a torque spec for the Allen head binder bolt on the 1R?
