Matthew, You can use the earlier derailleur with either the early or the later cr ank/spindle. The later derailleur requires the later crankarm; and the lat er crankarm, in turn, requires the later spindle. You can use the early crankarm with a later spindle, but the chainline w ill be shifted to the right by about 1.5mm. Actually, some early crankarms have had their mounting holes sufficiently stretched that the extra length of the later BB spindle will cause them to align perfectly. I hope this helped.
