Hi Ed and others,

I didn't intend to set off a fire storm of controversy, and I'm a tad surprised by it. I suppose the timing and phrasing sounded opportunistic, but that was not the intent. It was more a reflection that I decided to allocate a modest block (not terribly huge) of funds towards increasing our Campy/Cinelli stocks. And well, things are pretty chaotic out there. As I figured it made sense to put more funds into vintage bits, I thought perhaps some folks might want to put vintage funds into cash.

What I simply don't understand is the anger towards those who try to make a living in this business. Do you go the the grocery store and complain to the management that they are marking up the prices, and that they should encourage farmers to sell door-to-door? Of course not. The reason that dealers and stores exists is that they transact exchange efficiently. Note that I requested large piles of items to sell. Why? Because for many people selling a lot of bits is terribly time consuming. Plus, if one goes to sell 5 deraillieurs in a day, the price typically must be low. If a dealer buys them and holds onto them, they can sell the items WHEN buyers need them. They hold inventory, and that has a cost associated with it.

So if making a profit is so bad in a person's eyes, I hope they never patronize Rene Herse Bicycles / Boulder Bicycle when they need a special item, or Bicycle Classics Inc., or Renaissance Cycles, or CyclArt, or Campy Oldy in the UK, or Hilary Stone, or the March family in the UK, or Ray Etherton, or countless others. In aggregate, all these sellers make it possible to keep our beloved bicycles on the road. In fact, our own Listmeister Dale Brown has been known to sell bicycle parts at a profit - and it is through his success and kind generosity that this list can exist.
