Subject: [CR]Zeus crank bolts

I'm pretty sure I've used the Park 16 mm peanut buter wrench on Zeus Criter ium, 2000 and Competition cranks, although I also have a Zeus wrench.  It is a very snug fit and you must be sure to get the wrench fully engaged, or you can cause damage.  And I'm not sure the Park combo 14/15/16 wrenc h will work with Zeus.  I'm pretty sure I've also used the 16mm socket from the Stronglight extractor tool on Zeus.

Not sure why Zeus didn't just use 15mm like Campy, since they were using Ca mpy 22mm extractor thread.  Stronglight of course used 16mm bolts, but un til 1982 they used 23.35mm extractor thread, so it wasn't such a tight fit.   Anyone know if Stronglight switched to 15mm bolts when they went to Cam py 22mm extractor thread circa 1982?  I have several post-1982 Strongligh t cranks, but none were NIP, and I don't know that any came with original c rank bolts.

Finally, Sutherland says that early Lambert cranks used 7/8 x 24 TPI extrac tor thread.  I now have two early Lamberts, including the recently acquir ed Viking-badged one, so I may have a problem if I have to pull the cranks.   Anyone have a crank like Sutherland speaks of?  Anyone have one of th ese extractors?

The Park 16mm will not work - especially with Zeus Cronos. The edge will j am between the threads and the bolt points and cause some damage.

I know because I bought the wrench in question - packaged from the mid- eighties. You'll see a few in shops that ended up cracking at the points.

What I use is a Craftsmen 16mm socket that has been stuck on a crude homema de lathe and a file run against it from the middle to the socket edge in a graduated angle grind.

Crude but works. Use a quality socket such as Craftsmen so that even with only

1mm of material on the socket edge - it'll hold up without cracking.

I use about 18 lbs torgue when reinstalling the crank. Some here might recommened 2-4 lbs more. Ask around.
