The minimum width of a chainset is determined by the thickness of the pedal eyes and the width of the chainstays. I'm sure the extra width due to the slightly thicker aluminium cranks could have been found by a redesign of the chainstays

The narrowest cranksets I've ever seen were fitted to trackbikes for dernyracing. They lined up with a 80-90 mm wide rearhub and were of course square taper aluminium ;)
