Subject: [CR]Size of "Sprints" for Golden Age British bikes?

One thing which has puzzled me is what size were "sprints" for British lightweight bikes of the 1930s-50s? If 26 X 1 1/4" was the most popular(?) wheel size at the time why do we not see "sprint" - tubular or sew-up rims or tyres in that size.available from the usual sources? Clincher or wired-on rims in that size do appear on a reasonably regular basis - and tires are still being made for them. If the "sprints" were the same size what happened to those rims or the tyres?

How would one restore a true "race" bike of that time without period-correct "sprints"?
