So near and yet so far away !

Walter..why didn't you ask one of the locals in the bars to direct you to t he Muur? Most of them speak English. The Muur as used by the pro races such as the Tour of Flanders starts at th e top left hand corner of the big market place in which the Tourist Informa tion Centre can be found at the bottom left hand corner. From that point it swings sharply to the right and rears upwards. It can be easily identified because it always has cycling grafiti written on the paved surface. What y ou photographed appears to be the path leading upwards to the park at the t op of the hill.

And what another great opportunity you missed! just about 600 metres across the other side of the town, in GroeneLaane is the bike shop and warehouse of Marc Van Yperzeele, producer of the GIACOMELLI racing bikes. He's a wond erful polite English-speaking chap. Just outside town there is also one of the very few hands-on framebuilders remaining in Belgium. He used to build custom frames for many of the up-market shops.

better luck next time
