I used DHL for several bikes over the years, They were very competitive pric e-wise for Tandems. The last time I used them I signed up for a account # for a promotional disc ount. I shipped 2 NOS Raleigh's to the next state over and was quoted $48.60 for each bike by the DHL rep. at the counter. (He measured the box's and we ighed them). When the bill came there were added charges for "oversize" and "home del ivery" that more than DOUBLED the quoted price. No amount of reasoning with the billing dept. would get them to honor their quote. They went from the Low side of the price range to way over the Most expen sive ground service.
Bottom line; Beware of the account # billing. Fed-ex was very much the same way when I had an account with them, 20%-50% more than quoted. I now pay in full for all shipping at the counter. No more surprises in t he mail. No more waiting on hold to talk to an account rep. And no more watc hing you profit evaporate into their bank account. I never had damage problems with DHL, but, after the last fiasco I will not be using them anymore. Good riddance. On a similar note , I have had about a 30% damage rate on full bikes sh ipped to me. (Fed ex and UPS). Usually a fight with the carrier's insurance to get refunded. Is there a carrier that has a better track record ?
A settlement does not replace a bike that was rare to begin with. I have s everal NOS casualties hanging form the rafters, dented tubes, ruined.
