It's been brought to my attention that my initial response to David Bean was a bit too terse, and thus ambiguous. The Schwinn Town and Country was fillet-brazed, and done pretty well. While the British brothers Taylor were famed for their ability to lay down a very smooth fillet that didn't require any filing, this was not the case with the Schwinns I remember. On one of mine, a "wash" of lead over the brass had been used to smooth the joints, and that's what melted out when I was burning paint.

Now, to be overly cautious, this message is not to be taken as an endorsement of burning off paint, eh?

But we were so much younger then...
