I just shipped a complete bike coast-to-coast for $71 via FEDEX ground. FEDEX ground prices have jumped from about 51 bucks coast-to-coast to 70 bucks in the last year due to fuel price increases. They're making some nice money now since fuel has retreated, and likely their prices will decline in future, as long as fuel prices are down, anyway.

$140 for Indiana to California seems quite excessive to me. But, then, I don't generally charge for "packing." It's just a way to make some more money. Although, that said, if the bike is packed without regard to box-size, FEDEX ground could easily jump to 140 bucks. We all have to be careful to keep box sizes moderate to avoid out-of-control oversize charges. The FEDEX web site is a fairly accurate way to keep track of box-size and cost-to-ship thereof.
