My experience with guidonnets is that they work as well as standard levers, and much better than the "auxiliary" levers commonly installed on low-end bikes with standard levers.
Regarding types, my only recommendation is to avoid the plastic ones, as I have yet to see a pair where the plastic hasn't cracked shortly after installation. They have a metal core, but it is usually just bent sheet metal. MAFAC and CLB both made nice fully metal ones.
