I just saw Nicolas Sarkozy on France-24 news, and I'm pretty sure he confirmed the use of 5mm screws in this applications :-) Actually...

I just descended to "the dungeon" and measured the screws in the FD braze-on fitting of a Peugeot PGN-10. It measures 5mm x .08mm, as do the fittings for the seat post set screw and the water bottle braze-ons. Also, I can tell you that the Peugeot PSV-10 frames used the same sized fittings and screws as this frame.

Perhaps the use of 5mm screws for all the fittings on the frame was a Peugeot thing. It's clear that the slot in the derailleur body can take the larger 6mm screw, but that's now how these Peugeot frames were built. Which manufacturer's frames are you thinking of that used 6mm screws - was it Trek? (I think I recall that you worked for them at one time.)
