When I asked Peter Kohler (Roll Brittania) about shifter placement on one of Ken Sanford's vintage rides, he mentioned that the trigger was as Harvey described, traditionally just below and inside the brake lever so that you could down shift while braking. My hands were just too big to fit the shifter and brake lever so closely, so my ASC shifter is set more at the bar end, which still works well for me. Paul Raley brought a 1950 Raleigh RRA to a vintage ride of ours once with the original equipment bars, shifter and brake levers. There was plenty of room for my hands with his traditional set up. But with dry housing and pads at the time, it took a LOT to stop. I may be a retro grouch for tradition, but think I'll stick with my set up as is on the Taylor.

I am about to re-acquire my serviced FW hub from Hilary for my 1953 (the year I was born) Carlton project. It may just be a test bed for a lot of fifties stuff, not even sure what type of bars it'll get at this point. Has anyone else on this list ventured to get a classic from the year they were born?

Happy trails,

Dan Artley in Parkton, MD

Clem Skehan asks a question:

Greetings restoring a 1948 Carlton that I got on ebay years ago.?This bike came with a Sturmey Archer 4 speed and drop bars.?Componants on the

bike appear to be original.??Is there a Right, Prober or Perfered place to mount the Sturmey?triger on the drop bars?? Thanks for the help? ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I most commonly have seen the triggers mounted just below the right brake lever, in the curve of the drop. Angled inward, to not interfere with the brake operation.

Personally, I prefer to mount 'em out at the end of the drop section, sort of like a modern bar-end shifter. Just feels better to me, and doesn't interfere with pulling in the drops. My Ephgrave with ASC is set up this way, and I think that Dan Artley's Jack Taylor with ASC is, too. But he has the proper ASC trigger, and I make do with an FW trigger.
