Professional bike racing is also a marketing vehicle for manufacturers. I've seen many designs, especially on the track and in TT, that are aimed at just looking "different" - whether or not it actually improves the standard diamond frame, is debatable in most cases. If it catches the cameras eye, it has succeeded...
