I've purchased several bikes from distant locales through Craigslist -- three that come to mind (there may have been more) are a 1963 Cinelli from Raleigh, NC, a 1973 Colnago from Golden, CO and a 1981 Roberson from San Diego,CA. For all three I found local help, including help with payment and shipping. I sent funds to my local person via PayPal and then that person paid for and picked up the bike, boxed and shipped it. With one of those my local helper was a cousin. With the other two, I put out a call on the CR list for assistance and one of our wonderful comrades volunteered. (You know who you are -- thanks again to you both!)

All three came off without a hitch.
