There were J.Moynes freewheels that took a very odd type of remover. The back (spoke side) of the freewheel body, both inner and outer, had a pair of square bottom grooves (dados?) that were diametrically opposed. The freewheel remover was a pair of metal clips that slid over the largest cog and engaged those groves. You had to turn the outer body until the inner and outer grooves came into alignment before you could slide the tools into the proper position. Once the tools were engaged you had effectively made the freewheel into a "fixed wheel" by locking the outer body to the inner body. Now you could use a chain whip to remove the freewheel by turning it backwards like a track cog.

In actual practice it didn't work that great. The little clips would get gnawed up by the heavy shearing action. You only got a few uses out of them before they stopped functioning as intended and just popped off when you applied torque with the chain whip.

The shop I worked at when I started racing in the early 70's had a drawer full of NOS J.Moyne freewheels, extra cogs and a bag of the special pins. They were out of style by then. They weren't even gold! So the owner told me that I could help myself. Being a thrifty lad I used those freewheels for many years. I think that I might still have a couple of those pins in the bottom of my tool box. So Marty; if that is the style J.Moyne freewheel that you have let me know.
