I've found that Lennard Zinn's instructions in his maintenance book have produced very satisfying results: three cross with the spokes pulling, generous opening for the valve stem, decal logo facing the right side (I figured that out myself, duh).
What a sense of accomplishment building and truing and riding your own wheelset. I've built up at least 6 or more wheelsets using his book, and I personally feel super-confident riding on wheels that I built. For those of you in the group who have yet to give it I try, I heartily recommend you give it a go.
