Subject: [CR] Offset fork crowns: why?

Listers,

I have never seen an explanation of why a builder would use an offset fork crown instead of a non-offset/"centered" one. Could someone please satisfy my curiosity? The several postings I saw in the archives are devoted to identifying the various Specialized bikes, but none describe any of the merits of using an offset crown.

Thanks,
