Most of the bikes I've come across are M5. Occaisionally I've seen M6 threaded- I gues it's more to be used for a rack, but with a single eyelet you tend to use it for fenders if it's the only hole available. French bikes sometimes have threadless loops that use eyelet bolt fasteners.

Old British steel? whitworth, like it has been mentioned earlier? I would guess american made bikes with threaded holes in the dropouts would be SAE 10/32 or 1/4 20.

But I'm no expert of every frame and fork eyelet threading convention and 'standard' that has historically been used in each country's domestic bicycle industry.
