Re: [CR] Frame sizing-vintage frame size

(Example: Framebuilders:Alex Singer)

Experience with different frame sizes is so important so that you have a fee l for what fits. To me, after hundreds of frames, toptube is the most import ant size.  Within a couple of cm on the seattubeI can adjust the height of the saddle, but as Tom Sanders said, watch out for the drop.  The l onger the seattube, the less drop to the bars.  But, it is the toptube length where I focus, and the part in front of the bb is where I believe it is most important.  The setback part of the toptube is the measurement of the topptube behind the bb.  This will determine how the saddle fits on the seatpost.  If you have to shove your saddle all the way forward or back, then it isn't a good fit.  The part of the toptube from the b b forward will determine whether you have to use the stem to get it right.  To me, too many variables in the stem or the saddle rails will screw u p the fit.   I buy bikes that "seem" to be right. Then I ride them.  If they don't fit, I sell them, quickly.  If you don't have the a bility or inclination to try bikes like this, then you will be need to reall y fine tune your sizes.  The downside is that while you are asking ques tions of the seller, others are making offers.  Part of the game.    Lou Deeter, Orlando FL USA

I agree with the comments made by Tom and Angel about sizing a vintage frame that has not been ridden before purchase. But there's one measurement that no one has mentioned—frame stand over height. For me this is the single dimension that lets me know whether a frame is suited to me. It's a special measurement because it is that single number that combine s seat tube length, seat setback, BB drop and frame angles. No matter what those measurements may be they all come together in o ne number. I have a favorite bike and it's stand over height is my gold stan dard for what works for me.
