I found soaking the cleaned chain in melted paraffin to be a great lube. Th e chain needs to be lubed more often with this method but there sure isn't any sticky, dirt-gathering, grease on it.

Ted's post reminds me of a comical situation. I was up in the Dolomites whe n I met Greg LeMond dealing with an olive oil lube problem. http://italiancyclingjournal.blogspot.com/2007/07/2007-maratona-dles-dolomi tes-part-iv.html

But, really what were the best lubes during the period we are all intereste d in?

Was watching "The Brady Bunch" the other day and it was the episode wherein
Peter gets a job as a Bicycle Mechanic. It was comical as all he seemed
to be doing was flooding the drive train with oil from an old metal squirt
container. What I found to be clever was that the name of the bicycle s hop owner was Mr. Achinelli (a Cinelli.)
