Ben,

Your point is well taken. I researched the possible issues with Tufo tape long and hard before trying it myself and this was my first experiment. I check the adhesion after every ride on these tires.

Most of the 20+ tires that I have with base tape separation were made in Thailand. They range from new (the 2 Panaracers) to tires that are maybe 10-15 years old. None of them were ridden very much. Maybe I'm the only one with this problem?

I have some old Italian made road sewups plus some over 30 year old cyclocross tires, several Wolbers a Continental and a d'Alessandro. They still require a sharp instrument to separate the base tape from the casing.

Even though the latex on the sidewalls of most these older European made tires has dried out and turned brown there is still a tough bond between the base tape and the casings. Whereas with the newer Thai made tires the adhesive under the base tape has dried out too.

So what I'm suggesting is that something has changed in the manufacturing process over the years that has led to the base tape failure. The Panaracer tires with this problem have a very thin base tape with very little adhesive on them.

BTW, I don't ride these older sewup tires any more. I just can't bring myself around to throwing them out because the still look usable.
