Hi Robert, I am not sure if you are getting a bike with full Mafac hoods or half-hoods. I have ridden and raced great distances on bikes fitted with Mafac brake levers with the half-hoods. I found them to be comfortable.
When using half-hoods, I found it better to wrap a single width of handlebar tape around the body of the brake lever and the hood where the lever meets the handlebar. This made the junction more comfortable and prevented the half-hood from coming adrift.
If you are going to use the full hoods, I suspect that they would be an improvement.
