Hi Dan,

Thanks for the kind words about my 1963 Cinelli with the Spence Wolf "Alpine" derailleur. I've ridden this Cinelli quite a few times. It rides and shifts very well; I'm a fan of the Spence Wolf "Alpine" conversion. My particular example uses a Campy Record -- not a Nuovo Record. I suspect it's one of Wolf's early conversions -- both because of the use of the "Record" rather than Nuovo Record, but also because the cage is comparatively crude -- even next to some of the others, such as the one David Cooper used for his recreation.

As for shifting, it works just fine. Wraps a 32 front and 28 tooth rear with no problem.

The bike has a rare TA Criterium crank -- cottered. See here:

When Morgan gets wooljersey back up (thanks Morgan for all you do hosting the site!) you can see the Cinelli and the Spence Wolf derailleur here:

I want that conversion for my early 70's Colnago Super! The Colnago's got too many memories to give up, but I can't push those gears regularly in our very hilly area. Someone said a Simplex top, Cyclo bottom roller and drilled bar stock for the arm. I once found the Simplex on e-bay and couldn't bring myself to bid only to butcher it. I suppose my first gen. rally and a 14-32 would give the gears, but it just doesn't give the thrill of authenticity. David's Cinelli also had that Stronglight(?) bolted cottered/cotterless crank too with a good wide range double. Just a really neat combination of what is now very rare parts.
