The binder on those models was a threaded (6M x1) barrel brazed onto the back of the seat lug. The barrel was counter bored to accept a standard 6M x 1 Allen head bolt (stainless). Since the barrel itself was threaded there was no need for a two-piece (keyed or knurled) binder bolt -- just the simple Allen bolt threaded into the barrel was sufficient.

Is the barrel on your Trek perhaps stripped, such that the standard Allen bolt no longer holds?
