I heard that they were designed for racing and to slow down the bike rather than lock up the wheels in the heat of the fray. Sort of an anti-lock device. Probably urban legend folklore stuff, but it will make you feel cool as you slide out in front of that truck.
I put these on all my bikes cuz I love how they look. Of course, I have already ordered my Chrysler FIAT 500 too.
