We recently restored (and showed at the SDCBS) a 1965 Cinelli with an original factory 151BCD triple. The chainring set was 45-49-52t. It used a longer bolt and nut set, with the inner ring hanging off to the inside, and a longer x3 spindle.

Before you scratch your head at why, here's my theory: Given the shift quality of the early Record rear derailleurs, a front shift on a tight triple like that would have been both easier and more positive than a rear shift.

The only Strada triples I'm familiar with are those on Schwinn P15 with drilled and tapped crank-arms. This '75 Norman Fay has pre-date code 53-47-42 triple that uses spacers and longer Campy chainwheel bolts for attachment. Is this another, more expedient way to home-brew a triple and was this practice common? Did Campy approve this method...thus the longer bolts...or what did Campy do at factory?
