Very tasteful and sane, but check out the Zeus 2000 arms on my early 80's Austro-Daimler Superleicht on the CR site:

These came from the factory this way. The factory drillium jobs on Zeus 2000 cranks varied a good bit. These arms are among the more radical ones. Some were only deeply milled, sometimes on multiple levels, but not all the way through the crankarm. But this is by no means the only pair I have seen that were slotted all the way through. I've not heard any reports of an inordinate failure rate for Zeus 2000 cranks, so I guess the boys at Eibar knew what they were doing.
