Testing on rollers or drums has quite a number of limitations and is not very realistic so our tyre tests were conducted on the road. The surface was not especially smooth but our results were very repeatable - we had a couple of unexpected results so we repeated some of the tests several times because we were so surprised - in particular the Continental Grand Prix 23mm of this period had the worst rolling performance of all the tyres tested barring one with a kevlar belt... The Veloflex clincher rolling performance was significantly better than all the tubulars barring the Veloflex and the Clement Criterium - other tubs tested included the Conti Comp 240, Vittoria CX19, Vittoria Pro Team CS, Conti Tempo 19... One conclusion we did draw from our tests was that the super narrow 18mm tyres were significantly slower than the 23mm for rolling resistence; however we could not determine whether their superior aerodynamics would make up for their inferior rolling performance - I would guess that you'd need to be doing 30mmph average in a time trial before the losses outweighed the gains...
