Peter,

Simplex made Super LJ front derailleurs with 2 different cable attachment points - behind the seat tube and in front of the seat tube. The front connections derailleurs used a short piece of cable housing between the Simplex down tube cable guide and the derailleur.

The front connection models are far more common that the rear cable connection derailleurs.

My 1980 Bertin C37bis came with gold anodized Simplex derailleurs and gold Mafac brakes. It has Campy style cable guides brazed onto the BB but it came with the wrong style front derailleur. Bertin ran the cable through a piece of small diameter cable housing behind the seat tube and up under the front of the derailleur. It's always worked fine but looked cobby.

I'd been looking for the correct style gold Simplex Super LJ front derailleur ever since I bought the bike new in 1981. I finally found one on eBay last year.

I have 1 or 2 of the front cable connection derailleurs. Contact me off list if you are interested.
