A friend who works in a bike shop which sells exclusively non-bobbish bikes rang me a few weeks back asking if I was interested in buying a mint condition road bike from a shop neighbour. Used to be the guys Dad's or something.
At any rate I go down to take a look, and it looked pretty good.
Did my checklist, no stamped dropouts, no safety levers, alloy wheels, and they all checked out.
The parts are very nice, first generation Suntour Cyclone derailleur
Really nice long reach 600 brakes with a decidedly fender friendly profile
(those are 630x32 or 27x1 3/8) so plenty of clearance Clarence, especially if you went to 700's (the slots are plenty long, tried it)
600 non aero levers with sweet red shimano housing
Sakae Road Champion Randnner bars
Nice 27inch wheelset with sealed bearing high flange front low flange rear shimano hubs laced to Araya rims with surprisingly uncracked tires (slightly but really nothing to worry about, lotsa life left in them)
I assume that this is a UJB of the Sekai/Miyata/Fuji ilk, but have no way to prove this.
No top tube brazeons (Dura Ace branded clips, one missing)
and general 'ness lead me to presume early to mid 70s Correct me if I'm wrong.
So, to sum up, plenty of clearance for fat 700s (i betcha 38s would fit), nice drivetrain and brakes, forged chromed dropouts, half chromed fork,
If I am correct on the age, this bike is really in incredible condition, the tires are still in great shape, the hoods are all there for the brake levers, though my guess is they would rip if you tried to peel them off so no guarantees they will hold up under regular use. The crank is meh, a Shimano Tourney with swaged outer ring, nice chainguard though held on by allen bolts,
So looks to me like a vanity project with too much effort thrown at it as the frame is good not great, the parts SEEM top o' the line or just about, and the paint and subsequent lug lining just doesn't seem stock to me.
And the weird headtube stickers
what's with that? they're peeling and made of paper it seems.
This would make a great commuter as is with a rack and maybe different bar, some fenders, a basket.
Wanna go on those vintage rides with the CR guys, but lack the necessary iron?
