With regards to the rule that all motorcycle riders´ suits had to be a certain size it can be said that this was the outcome of some pretty heavy cheating by the pacers. Some even went so far as to build air blowing boxes which caught the air pressure when riding and ducted it into suit arms and legs which had been tightened at the end to enable them to be pumped up to give more protection from the wind. Another nice idea was to enlarge oil catching sheets behind the engine to such an extent that they might have prevented a major pipeline leak, or to widen driving belt pulleys inordinately. Also, motorpacers fitted engine parts (manual oil pumps in the early days) so that they would have to circle their legs around them.

It´s all in my book coming out at the end of the month, hopefully. The book has been written from the point of view of the historian, removed from his topic by about 90 to 100 years, so you can expect lots of photos, but don´t expect any tales from first hand experience. Also, it´s in German, and there´s not much more in it than what was in the photocopied manuscript I distributed some years ago, although the publisher and I made about 200 changes in the course of the production. The editing process was one of the most pleasing literary experiences of my life, and I hope the book reflects that as well.

However, Ted Ernsts´s memoirs, if he wrote them, would be something which would be irreplacable and would better any history book by miles, and I´d be first in line to get a copy. I do hope I haven´t missed anything here in rural Germany.

Please remember that I still use analog dial up internet (I use an Apple ][ sometimes, and there´s a Lisa sitting on the floor next to my desk which I also dream of using), so please mail no photos. Thanks.
