Boyoboy, Mark Winkelman, have you ever tapped into something primordial! I have two small plastic jars of the stuff and yes, the smell is evocative and stirring. When my daughter got into bikes in a major way a couple of years ago, I let her have a sniff, as a way to connect her to bygone days. I asked a chemist/bikie recently if he had any idea what was in it. Nope, he replied. Man, if I was a chemist, Campy grease would have been my doctoral thesis! I can smell it now, even though my precious stash is under the workbench in my bedroom at home. (Yeah, I know how weird that sounds. My wife is very understanding, and it is kind of a cool bench.) A little fruity, with nutty highlights and a tart finish. Although I suspect it involves olive oil, my jars are over 30 years old and haven't gone rancid or separated, so I don't think much organic product is present.
I never worked up the nerve to taste it.
