They were part of a coordinated campaign on the part of A.L. Colombo / Columbus which was developed in response to TI Reynolds truly incessant advertising here in the U.S. market. Said campaign also featured advertising that appeared within the pages of Bicycling and Bike World magazines featuring the likes of Eddy Merckx and Roger De Vlaeminck along with that famous tag line "America discovers Columbus".
In the humble opinion of this former "ad guy", quite a clever turn of the phrase and an arguably effective product pitch.
