I assumed the bottom race assembly is an integral unit and installed it is as such. I did it by installing the unit on the fork and then figuring out a press setup to install the fork and bearing into the frame. Getting it apart would be harder, you would probably need to protect and then tap the top of the steerer.

This is a very robust unit. I doubt a properly set up one has ever been worn out unless the grease dried out (and maybe not even then). The taper roller bearings requires near perfectly aligned bearing surfaces, which is above any normal standard for a well built frame or fork. For instance, I doubt if any framebuilder's tooling makes sure the steerer threads are exactly concentric and in parallel plane with the fork race seat. In other words, you could do all the work of installing this and it might not work out.

For what it is as a machining and technical project, the headset is a good deal but for me, one is enough. If you used a bike tens of thousands of miles a year and had a problem with wearing out headsets, it would be a good idea but it is overkill, tough to install and you could damage a steerer or need a special tooling setup to remove it.

On ebay there is an Ofmega CX headset for sale: http://ebay.com/<blah>

Can somebody please explain how one goes about installing this headset? It would appear that the fork crown race is integral to the lower cup. Do you need to remove the plastic dust shield and then remove the internal c-ring?
