I was one of the two who wrote to the seller to enquire about the state of the sale. My question was:

"Has this bike been sold?"

Two days later, I received this response: "No its still on ebay"

There was obviously no threat, implied or otherwise in my question. I just wanted to get to the bottom of the apparent discrepancy.

I think that perhaps, we are going a little overboard on this issue. The "Buy It Now" option is part of the Ebay format. Furthermore, sellers often reserve the right to sell an item locally. The fact is that an item belongs to the seller until the auction ends and the buyer pays for the item. If someone asks about a BIN price and the seller responds, so be it! Auctions with both a reserve price and a BIN price can have active bids and yet be sold for the BIN price. The only possible issue is that current potential buyers are not aware of the BIN price because it was not listed. But, when an item is listed with a favorable BIN price, only about fifty people see it before it sells. If the seller had listed this Gillott with a 250 GBP BIN, none of us would know about it and this issue would not have come to light because it would have sold in the first few hours.
